: : Our store has been having some problems with excessive tardiness and absences. Like the younger employees calling in sick Friday or Saturday night, and Sat/Sun morning, for example. Initially, a rule was instituted that if you were going to be sick, you had to first find someone to replace your shift. This was aimed at the "trouble makers" mainly, but it caused some problems for those people who rarely ever call in sick, and only called in when they truly were sick (we're humans, and even the most honest hardworking get sick once in awhile). Now, a chart has been posted in the breakroom, with the months dates and everyone's name. If one is sick or tardy, it is noted on the chart, for all to see. If managers have a problem with an employee's attendance record, this should be addressed privately. They can even document it on a chart, but not for all booksellers to see. A bad virus is going around the store, and even the "honest, hardworking" booksellers are getting sick. But everyone is afraid to call in sick. So we would now make a lovely commercial for Dayquil! The good people call in sick, and are treated equal to a "troublemaker." If they come to work to prove they are sick, the attidude is that they must be well enough, as they came to work! I see that the managers are trying to solve some problems, but isn't this public chart serious harassment/discrimination??? Any thoughts?

: 1. It is not the responsibility of the sick employee to get a replacement to cover his/her shift. What are they going to do if you do not cover the absence - give you a warning?
: 2. The practice of placing a tardiness/absenteeism chart in the break room is very questionable and probably constitutes harassment. It could possibly even be the basis for a legal action against the company. Contact your DM about getting it removed immediately.
: The proper procedure for dealing with tardiness and absenteeism is to issue warnings and ultimately dismiss the culprits.
: Your manager sounds like a bully who should be removed.
