At our store, no one clocks off until all are done (and per company policy, we all leave together). If a bookseller is done with their work, they go help elsewhere. Usually, for example, the cafe or music gets done, and those employees help books finish up. On the flip side, if say the cafe is not done and books is, then book people help the cafe to finish up. The only exception I have ever seen is when there is a job left that only 1 or 2 people can do, like mopping the cafe (we only have 1 mop and bucket), and then the majority are allowed to leave together, and the manager remains behind with the last 1 or 2 people so they can finish. In short, everyone helps each other to get done and we all leave together, with no one sitting around (or working) off the clock. Also, we normally get out of our store within 1 hour of closing, and so this helps for a speedy close. The only complaints I've ever heard are a few people who feel they are cheated out of 30 minutes or so. But most are happy to leave early. You should suggest this to your manager. It's a good idea, promotes production, and time/payroll saving techniques. A few brownie points never hurt in the long run....

: I think that before you go crazy calling everyone someone might want to talk to the manager directly...(the shortest distance between two points is a straight line) You might try an asm also that way you've had a documented discussion with someone else just in case of retaliation. However, I know the managers are under strong pressure to cut payroll and it may be a choice (a bad one)the manager thinks is helping... you get scheduled but cut a little extra on the side...but if forced that GM may cut entire shifts. IF its at close that your talking about for safety purposes everyone leaves together so if your done and clocked out you need to stay until everyone gets done. This came up at my store and the GM decided that if people had a problem about clocking out and waiting 10 to 15 minutes for their co-workers that she would give them each specific task to do so people just didnt act like they were working and really riding the clock (and we all know at the end of the night when all books are put away we group together and talk) also she made the night shift start 30 minutes later so no one would go into overtime. Needless to say no one gets out early anymore and when you have school its no fun, so be careful. I would recommend someone talking to the GM first.
