Don't know what to tell you. I do know it IS B&N policy to fire on the spot in this kind of situation. We had an employee who was caught giving employee discount to a friend and was fired on the spot (also admitted that they knew they shouldn't have done that). You might try pleading to a higher power in the company, but I wouldn't doubt if they tell you that you should have known the rules after 2 years. Might just have to chalk it up as a learning experience. Sorry.

: I work for a college bookstore barnes and noble cafe. In the cafe, the policy is to give all employees a discount on food and cafe merchandise by using the "one discount plan". In the past, whenever an employee came through the line, I would type in "1" and "discount plan" and then ring up their food items... any other items that they had purchased from the other side of the store usually dont go through on that discount plan. the store policy is that we are not allowed to give discounts on non-cafe items until the last hour of the day, and only a manager can give them. I have worked at this store for two years and have never had this situation occur before, but today an employee came through the line and bought cafe items with his discount, and then at the last minute he gave me a few items from the other side. Being that there was a line out the door, I quickly rang up his other items not even thinking that the discount would go through. well, it did and because the discount only shows up on the receipt I did not notice and niether did he... meanwhile a manager is in line behind him observing the whole thing and doesnt say anything to me, instead she goes and tells my cafe manager and store manager who proceeds to call me into her office and fire me and the other employee on the spot. i was never aware of the way the other discounts work, it was never specified to me that they had to be rung up differently for specific items (ie: "grocery" items can be rung up with the discount plan in place and the plan won't go though, but other items will) and i feel as if the manager that watched it happen was in the wrong for not saying anything. why would i give away discounts in front of another manager anyhow!? anyhow, he was an employee at the store for 3 years, and i was there for 2... we were never warned or anything... and i was told that it was barnes and noble policy to fire us on the spot. is there anything i can do!? (not that i even want my job back at that corperate monster of a store) but i need some help. thanks, sarah
